Forum for Future Ocean Floor Mapping in Monaco

The GEBCO-Nippon Foundation Forum for Future Ocean Floor Mapping was opened this week by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. His opening speech expressed support for GEBCO's work to provide the world with a bathymetric chart of the oceans. GEBCO Chairman Shin Tani stressed the need to accelerate the mapping of the oceans in the upcoming years. The main task of the forum is to formulate an agenda for the years ahead, in which speeding up the mapping of all uncharted waters will be key.

The first day in the Oceanographic Museum saw keynote speakers like Robert Ballard, Larry Mayer, David Heydon, Simon Winchester and Jyotika Virmani, all setting the scene for the conference as well as for the future of ocean floor mapping. The second day comprises panel discussions in which the close to 200 delegates are invited to share their views and questions. The third day aims to bring together the deliberations into a sort of 'roadmap' for the future of ocean floor mapping.
