UK Admiralty Information Overlay Service in Danelec Marine ECDIS

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) is available on Danelec Marine DM800 G2 Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). AIO allows subscribers using the Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS) to view the latest temporary and preliminary notices to mariners as overlays on the ECDIS screen, as an aid to route planning and navigation. The AIO is displayed as a single layer on top of the basic Electronic Navigation Chart display.

Thomas Mellor, UKHO head of OEM technical support and digital standards, explains that AIO helps bridge crews identify areas of possible uncertainty and risk at the crucial planning stage. AVCS customers can use AIO on compatible ECDIS platforms at no extra cost.

All Danelec DM800 ECDIS G2 models and all software versions from 2.0 and up are AIO compatible, and it will also be offered with the new Danelec ECDIS models that will be launched this year, according to Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine. He adds to expect the AVCS AIO to contribute to navigational efficiency by superimposing potential hazards such as restricted zones, dredging activity, temporary navaids and obstructions with an explanatory text window on the electronic chart display automatically. It also gives advance notices of permanent changes about to take place.
