Workshop Special Offshore Projects
On Friday the 20th of September the Hydrographic Society Benelux organised a workshop at the Faculty of Geodesy of the TUD in Delft with the theme of Special Offshore Projects.
The workshop was traditionally opened by chairman Rob Luijnenburg, who after giving information about society matters, passed the chairmanship for the day to Sjoerd van den Brom.
The programme consisted of two lectures, the first of which was given by Jack J. Spaan of Excalibur Engineering bv.
Mr Spaan gave the 90-person audience a detailed description of the plans of Excalibur Engineering bv to build a specialised heavy-lift vessel named Pieter Schelte to remove decommissioned offshore platforms from mainly the North Sea offshore fields.
The spectacular Pieter Schelte will be constructed from two VLCCs - very large crude carriers - to form the world’s largest catamaran with a length of about 340 metres and a width of 120 metres. She will be capable of lifting the entire superstructure of a platform between her bows by gripping the module support frame, as well as retrieving the entire jacket installation in one piece to the main deck during the same trip.
The second lecture was given by Capt. Bert Kamsteeg of Smit Salvage bv and consisted of a presentation and film detailing the preparation and execution of the salvage of the Russian nuclear submarine ‘Kursk’. As usual, the workshop was concluded with an informal social event.
