HSB Educational Fund
The Hydrographic Society Bene-lux (HSB) operates an Educational Fund (EF) for the purpose of enlarging and improving hydrographic knowledge. The regulations for the HSB Educational Fund are published on the HSB webpage: www.hydrographicsociety.nl. To clarify the three key points of EF-policy, a summary of EF-regulations is presented below.

a) Best hydrographic thesis (award)

Award description: The best thesis in hydrography or related disciplines made by master or bachelor students studying at institutes within the Benelux. The award will be granted to a thesis of high calibre and neatly presented. The thesis should bring some surplus value to the field of hydrography.
Reward: Euro 500 (gift)
Procedure: First selection for this award is done by the teachers/instructors of the relevant institutes. They will then send the selected thesis to the secretary of the HSB. The EF-delegate HSB board member will offer them to the EF-committee.
Time scheme: The annual deadline for submission of the thesis to the secretary of the HSB is July 31st of the current year. The EF-committee will decide before October which thesis is the best. The award will be presented to the applicants at the HSB meeting in October/November.

b) Published article in geodetic/hydrographic periodical (stimulant)

Description: Each article published in an (internationally) recognised periodical in the field of hydrography or hydrography-related subjects.
Reward: Euro 250 for national (Benelux) articles, Euro 500 for international articles (gift).
Procedure: Applicants should send a letter with reference to the published article (include a copy/original of the published article) to the secretary of the HSB. The secretary will send the application to the EF-committee. The EF-committee will inform applicants regarding refused requests, along with a short written account of the motivation for such. The application will be evaluated on several requirements. Most important requirements are 1) Situation is not caused by the applicant. 2) Continuation of activities (study) is of essential importance for the hydrographic business. 3) No other or insufficient means of support. 4) Support is not a case of subsidy.
Time scheme: Within one month after the application the applicant must receive a message concerning the application.

c) Financial support (support)

Description: Financial assistance to students or researchers who cannot continue with their activities, with the consequence that achieved results will be lost due to financial limitations.
Reward: Depending upon circumstances, with a maximum of Euro 2000 (gift).
Procedure: Request should be send to the HSB secretary. The request must be completed with information of the applicant, contact person, full description of the situation, motivation for the request and an estimate of the need.
Time scheme: The HSB secretary will send the application to the EF-committee/ board delegate within one week. The EF-committee will decide about the request within two weeks. The applicant will be notified personally of the result. Written confirmation will be sent by the secretary.

HSB Education Fund committee members are Johan Stam (chairman), Sicco Kamminga and Rob Meijer. The EF-HSB board delegate is Jan van den Berg.
