XVII meeting GEBCO Subcommittee: Undersea Features Names
Over the past several years, Russian hydrographers, sea geologists and oceanographers have prepared material for posterity in the names of their discovered undersea features, the names of Soviet and Russian seamen and scientists who have made a significant contribution to research of the world’s oceans. Some HSR members also took part in the preparation of these materials. For them a big event was therefore the 8th to 11th June 2004 Saint Petersburg XVII meeting of the Subcommittee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) for the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO).
The following persons took part in the meeting. Chairman of the SCUFN Hans-Verner Schenke (Germany), Michael Huet (France), Trent C. Palmer, Lisa Tailor and Norman Z. Cherkis (USA), Jose Luis Frias Salazar (Mexico), Yasuhiko Hara (Japan), Gleb B. Udintsev, Galina V. Agapova, Natalia N. Turko, Guerman D. Naryshkin, the captain 1st rank Nikolay A. Nesterov and the captain 1st rank (ret.) Vadim M. Sobolev, captains 1st rank Vladimir M. Fomin and Valentin G. Smirnov (Russia). Also present was the expert of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, Mr Dmitry Travin.
This meeting accepted a decision on appellation to 22 undersea features in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans of names of Soviet and Russian seamen, hydrographers and scientists. Among these were the following personages: Chief of Hydrographic service of the Navy in 1963-1985, Admiral A. I. Rassokho (1914-2003), the director of the VNII Oceanology in 1972-2002, academician of the Russian Academy of Science I.S. Gramberg (1922-2002), sea captain participant of the first Soviet Antarctic expeditions I. A. Man (1903-1982), oceanographer and polar researcher M. M. Somov (1908-1973) and others.
Consideration of offers on the part of the Russian delegation about assignment of names in the Indian and Pacific oceans was deferred, due to lack of time, to XVIII session.
The meeting was organised by the Head Department of Navigation and Oceanography, Ministry of Defence, Russia. Participants were also offered an interesting and full cultural programme. Nevertheless, the HSR also made a small contribution in voluntarily and at the request of skilled polar explorer and expert on study of the Arctic Ocean Mr Norman Cherkis, offering visits to the famous ice-breaker Krasin.
