The HSB held a workshop about ‘Airborne techniques’ on 15 October 2004. The workshop was held in ‘Mobilion’, Utrecht.
The workshop started with an overview of airborne techniques. Mr. Vogelzang from RWS-AGI explained which techniques could be used in a hydrographic related environment. The use of different sources e.g. camera pictures from airplanes or satellites, radar images, infrared images, laser altimetry were explained as well as how they could be used.
Mr Wensink from the company ARGOSS explained a tidal prediction programme and mapping of shallow seas using data collected from satellites. Satellite imagery provide information about tidal phases for all places in the world. A model computes the height and phase of the tide and also the current and direction. Using the satellite imagery coastlines and rivers could be charted. In clear water even seabed cover such as sand, sea weed and coral, could be detected.
The last speaker was Mr Klomp from Fugro who explained Fli-map, a laser altimetry solution to measure the dikes and embankments in The Netherlands. The data is collected using helicopters. Besides height measurements two video camera’s, and two photo camera’s are used to collect the data. All the data is combined to make a well defined map of the area.
After the hydrographic part there was a guided tour through the exhibition of ‘Mobilion’. The exhibition explains the activities of Rijkswaterstaat on roads and waterways. It was a very interesting and interactive exhibition.
Of course the workshop ended with a social drink.
In contrast with an earlier announcements the next workshop will be on the 22 December and not on 10 December. It will be combined with a Christmas drink.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
