The General Meeting of the South African Hydrographic Society is now a firm fixture on members monthly activities and it is encouraging to see old and new colleagues attend our fairly informal meetings at Royal Cape Yacht Club at the end of every month. We hope the enthusiasm is due to the presentations and social interaction that are offered at each meeting, but are sure the liquid refreshments and snacks are good incentives to attend the meeting, especially during the cold and wet winter months!

During the AGM, the President mentioned that the HSSA should be more active in promoting the aims and objectives of the Society as per the revamped Constitution. To this end, a Technical Awareness Seminar (TAS) is being planned for the first week in December 2003. This four-day event will be held at the Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT) in Simon’s Town and, judging by the good response from overseas manufacturers, is going to be the highlight of the Society’s activities for 2003. Besides the technical presentations, there are already demonstrations planned by AUV and ROV operators, as well as access to a survey vessel for installation of the latest positioning, hydrographic and geophysical equipment.

The theme for the TAS is ‘Technologies for a New Century’ and we are hoping to draw delegates from the whole Southern African sub-continent. The Planning Work Group is well advanced in the organisation of the event and invitations to attend will be sent out during the month of October.
