The Hydrographic Society of America

  01/01/1970

The Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA) is busy preparing for the US Hydrographic Conference 2007, to be held 14th to 17th May 2007 in Norfolk, Virginia. The conference will combine technical-paper sessions with training workshops and an extensive exhibition. Of course, the usual outstanding social events will enliven the experience for all participants. The 2007 conference coincides with celebrations of the two hundredth anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Coast Survey and the four hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown, Virginia Colony, just a few leagues from Norfolk. A call for papers has been issued and abstracts are invited. More detailed information about the conference will be available on the THSOA website: www.thsoa.org

THSOA, with the assistance of NOAA, is sponsoring the 43rd University of New Brunswick Shallow Water Multi-beam Course. The course, scheduled to be held from 8th to 13th January 2007 in Norfolk, Virginia, costs US$3000. Current members of THSOA and the Canadian Hydrographic Association (CHA) receive a US$200 discount. There are still several open slots. For more information visit www.thsoa.org

The Gulf Coast Chapter of THSOA is continuing to rebuild in the wake of last year's devastating Hurricane Katrina. Although many chapter members, both individual and corporate, were displaced by the damage from the storm, progress in rebuilding is steady. The Chapter has been overseeing distribution of THSOA's Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund to deserving recipients throughout the region. THSOA is grateful for the generous support of this fund from hydrographers throughout the world. Despite some of their own impact from Hurricane Rita last year, the Houston Chapter remains our strongest, with regular meetings featuring a wide range of presentations and discussions on hydrographic topics, technology, and other issues. During the summer both the Gulf Coast and the Houston Chapters held meetings at which they hosted Andy Armstrong, THSOA president, for spirited discussions on priorities for the Society and the topic of hydrographer certification.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
