National Hydrographers’ Day As already announced, Russian hydrographers celebrated the first ‘World Hydrography Day’ rather modestly, as it fell in a period of summer fieldwork for some and holidays for others. Maybe one reason for this was also that Russian hydrographers hold their own national ‘Hydrographers’ Day’. This professional holiday was established in 1997 and since then has been celebrated not only by ‘pure’ hydrographers but also by everyone in any way involved in hydrography. October is an autumn month and as a rule all fieldwork is already finished by now and hydrographers are back at their home bases processing material. So it was logical that the date taken for this holiday was 13th October. This year, as in previous years, Russian hydrographers celebrated the holiday within their organisations and workplaces, so that the HSR did not arrange any special activities. HSR Council Session On 1st December the regular session of HSR Council took place. At the beginning Council president Nikolay Neronov congratulated the author of these lines on his 75th birthday and delivered him a congratulatory address. As well as taking account of his voluntary work as HSR secretary over fourteen years, Council has decided to award him the status of Deserved HSR Member. The corresponding membership card was handed him. As usual, president Neronov presented some results of Society activities over recent months and informed the meeting concerning coming activities in which members will take part. He also said that HSR member Alexander Gruzdev had presented Council with his opinion on a manuscript of the book Dreams and Destinies. In this work, the author has collected data on the course of the lives of 95 fellow students who graduated from naval school in 1953. For three years, the author carried out his titanic work in gathering his data. Members believe this unique book, were it to be issued, would be of huge interest not only to future historians and sociologists but also to other readers, as it shows the life and destinies of a whole generation of twentieth-century hydrographers. Council voiced its appreciation of the author’s work and unanimously approved the text of a positive report. Council also considered and accepted several individual applications for affiliation to the Society. HSR secretary and Captain of the First Rank Valentin Smirnov presented his newly published book From Wind and Current Charts to Underwater Mines. This contains hitherto unknown episodes concerning Russian-American scientific and military contacts in the middle of the nineteenth century. The monograph is the first research in Russia devoted to the versatile activities of the famous American hydrographer, oceanographer and meteorologist Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873). Among the characters in the book are prominent figures of Russian history: Grand Duke Constantine, military minister D. Miliutin, academicians A. Kupffer, V. Struve, G, Gelmersen, E. Lentz, seamen F. Litke, F. Wrangel, P. Ricord, M. Reineke, G. Butakov, N. Krabbe, A. Gorkovenko, V. Rimskiy-Korsakov, and others. It is important that this book was issued in the bicentenary year of Matthew Maury. Council members highly commended the content and quality of the book and congratulated the author on its publication.
