AHS is thrilled to have Paul Hornsby continue for a fourth term as chairman of the International Federation. Paul con–tinues to do a fantastic job, and the Australasian Society would like to commend him on his hard work and dedication.

Upon retirement of our director of communication, Ron Whitmore, the Society is pleased to announce that his successor has been chosen. Venessa O’Connell, a hydrographic surveyor from Sydney Ports Corporation has taken over the role. Venessa recently represented Australia as a FIG 2010 Young Ambassador attending the thirteenth FIG Congress in Munich, Germany. She spoke on behalf of Paul Hornsby at the congress, presenting a paper entitled ‘Strategic Intent of IFHS and How to Attract Young People to Hydrography’. The paper discusses the current shortage of surveying skills in Australia and suggests improvements to overcome the problems, as well as ways to improve current services to members. The paper can be viewed on the FIG website at www.fig.net

Hydro 07- Focus on Asia, Meeting the Interface Challenges of the Littoral Zone will be held in Cairns from 22nd to 24th November 2007 and is shaping up to be a fantastic event. Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
