| 14th Annual General Meeting The fifteenth year of existence of the Hydrographic Society, Russia has passed, and on 27th March in Saint Petersburg the fourteenth AGM was held in a conference hall of the Department of Navigation and Oceanography. A total of 241 persons were registered with the HSR on this day. However, unfortunately some could not attend the meeting. The AGM began with a brief presentation by IHB Directing Committee president, Vice Admiral Alexandros Maratos. He reviewed the work of the Bureau, emphasising the modern-day significance of hydrography. He also gave information concerning the formal signing of a joint Memorandum on the operational relationship between the IFHS and the IHO, and expressed a wish to see the HSR become a member of the IFHS in the near future. The speech by the Admiral was listened to with attention, and HSR President Nikolay Neronov then thanked the speaker and handed him as souvenir an audiocassette of the ‘March of the Hydrographers’. This march was composed and written during the second world war by two students of the Hydrographic faculty of the Frunze Naval School, A. Lyn’kov (music) and B. Zemlyanov (text). For some years students of the faculty sang it, marching each evening around the school. With time the march was forgotten. In 1995 it was resurrected and now Russian hydrographers think of it as their professional hymn. According to accepted agenda, HSR President Dr Nikolay Neronov reported on the activities of the Society over the past year. He reminded his those present that, as over recent years, HSR Information circulars had continued to be issued, sessions of Council held on a regular basis, the Honorary diploma awarded to graduate-hydrographers, and messages concerning events in the Society sent in to HydroInternationalfor publication. The Act of the Revision Committee on financial activity was then unanimously approved, and elections of HSR officers and Council members were conducted. All office-bearers were re-elected. After announcement of the election results there was a presentation of a short slideshow of some Society events over the past fifteen years, given by Viktor Rybine. As is the tradition, the fourteenth AGM finished with a modest buffet. |
