HYDRO 2007
The HYDRO 2007 Committee has been making steady progress on this significant international conference to be held at Cairns, Australia from 21st to 24th November 2007. That is, between the triennial Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Symposium (19th to 21st November 2007) and the Ocean Mapping Group Multi-beam Sonar Course (26th November to 1st December 2007). The Australasian Hydrographic Society website www.ahs.asn.au provides details on HYDRO 2007 and the convenors are seeking papers abstracts by 30th June 2007.

East Australian Region
The East Australia Region meeting planned for mid-March 2007 had unfortunately to be cancelled due to most of the officeholders being absent. It is expected that the next meeting will provide significant discussion regarding activities occurring in the hydrographic world.

West Australian Region
The West Australian Region held a meeting on 14th March 2007 held a meeting on 14th March at Fremantle Ports head office. Elections for committee positions were carried out at the meeting and as a result the Region now has a fresh group to lead it into the future. The nomination results are listed below:

2006 Officers Nomination Results

  • President: Alec Millett
  • Secretary: Steve Duffield
  • Treasurer: Bruce Baker
  • Committee Members: Greg Paten, Anthony Kerr, Cass Castalanelli, Bill Russel-Cargill
  • AHS Secretary: Mal Jones

The meeting and events were enjoyable for all concerned, highlights being the opportunity to meet and to network with fellow members and to catch up firsthand on industry-related news, as well as an overview on WAR. Lyle Banks’ presentation on the Outer Harbour Development was well received and of great interest to everyone who attended. The evening concluded with dinner at one of Fremantle’s local landmarks, the Roma, which went so well the restaurant owner had basically to ask the ‘stayers’ to leave so he could close up and let his staff and himself go home! A good night was had by all.

AHS (WAR) are planning again to be in partnership with the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) for another AUV Workshop (details/date to be provided once finalised). The previous AUV workshops were very successful and well subscribed.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
