The HSR secretary Valentin Smirnov together with other HSR members were in Kaliningrad (Russia) from 24 to 27 September 2007, during the Museum of the World Ocean's 4th International Conference, ‘The History of Oceanology'. Scientists and experts from Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kaliningrad, Astrakhan, Sevastopol (Ukraine), Minsk (Byelorussia) and Tallinn (Estonia) took part in the Conference.

During the Conference, the following themes were discussed: oceanological institutions and their research on oceanological formation; the role of a research fleet in studying the world ocean; outstanding research of the sea by scientists/oceanologists; and studying Mediterranean Seas using the Baltic Sea as an example. The special symposium ‘Actual problems of preservation of historical vessels' also took place.

Report
Dr Valentin Smirnov presented the report ‘Ferdinand Wrangel - the researcher of the Mediterranean, Black and Azov Seas'. After the report, he gave his books Unknown Wrangel (2006) and Research of the World Ocean Made by Navy Seamen and Scientists of Russia. 1826-1895 (2007) to the Museum as a gift.

The Museum of the World Ocean was created in 1990. Its development continues: among its basic exhibits are the legendary research vessel Vityaz , a submarine B-413 , the research vessel Cosmonaut Victor Patsaev and a fishing trawler (that will be ready for demonstration in July 2008).

The permanent director of the Museum is Svetlana Sivkova. Her activity at this post is highly appreciated: she is the ‘Honoured Art Worker of Russia' and the ‘Honoured Citizen of Kaliningrad'.

The Conference planned for 2009 in Saint Petersburg will be on the famous ice-breakerKrasin, which has been a part of the Museum of the World Ocean since 2004.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
