During the past few years in Russia there has been an increase in the number of various private firms connected with navigation and hydrography.

The Hydrographic Society, Russia (HSR) feels itself therefore obliged from time to time to arrange visits to new firms to make their acquaintance. After each visit the Council informs HSR members of the results in HSR Information newsletters.

In December last year a group of HSR members headed by President N. Neronov visited the research-product concern ‘Promelectronika’. The purpose of this visit was to meet the firm’s production team. After familiarisation with developments and company products, a brief seminar took place in its office.

The theme of this seminar was the possibilities of the concern to satisfy the requirements of hydrographers by supplying them with equipment necessary in the implementation of hydrographic works. It opened with a report on the technical possibilities of the concern by its General Director and member of the HSR, Dr Mrs Natalja Tkhorzhevskaja. She corroborated the fact that the company’s specialisation is in the development and production of navigational and hydrographic equipment, underlining that the firm’s specialists not only product instruments but also install them on ships and carry out tests and reparations.

During the subsequent discussion, all participants agreed that a system including echosounder and electronic chart system integrated with GPS/GLONASS receiver could be used successfully in hydrographic survey if the accuracy of measurements met requirements of the IHO S-44 standards.

One important factor mentioned was the capability of the concern promptly to produce a complete set of apparatus according to customer requirements. Participants in the seminar also learned that the concern works in close co- operation with such Russian institutions as the State Research Navigation-Hydrographic Institute of the Ministry of Defence, the Baltic Shipyard, the Joint-stock company ‘Navigation Instruments’ and others.

Hydrographic Survey for Riverbed Erosion

U.S. Geological Survey were out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyzes the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gage height at the Williston gage was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgage at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
