Do you want to expand your world? Are you ready for a new challenge? Or would you like to further specialize in your field? It's all possible in the Royal Netherlands Navy. A large and diverse employer where more than 11,000 people do responsible, varied work. Civilians and military personnel work together in close-knit teams. In the Navy, you work on land, at sea and in the air. From sailor to officer, from engineer to dentist, from sports teacher to cook, from pilot to nurse - everyone does important work. Because a job in the Navy means you're helping to maintain peace and security, both nationally and internationally.
There are two ways you can work in the Navy as a hydrographer. Either as an officer, a position for which you will receive military training, or as a civilian. In both cases, you will have the most modern equipment at your disposal to conduct hydrographic surveys in Dutch waters and the waters around the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Think, for example, of measuring water depths with a Multibeam Echosounder or detecting wrecks and obstacles with high-resolution Side Scan Sonars.
RANGE OF DUTIES: You are responsible for the navigation and operation of the hydrographic systems and communication equipment on board. You gather and process hydrographic, oceanographic and meteorological data. Quality control and reporting are important aspects in this respect. Moreover, you are an approachable and competent discussion partner for your younger colleagues and contribute to their training and the development of their hydrographic knowledge.
REQUIREMENTS: HBO (Higher Vocational Education) in Hydrography (IHO category A Surveyor) and basic nautical skills.
PROSPECTS: After officer training, you can achieve additional competencies that will give you the opportunity to advance to first hydrographic officer and subsequently to commander. Your military-hydrographic knowledge, experience and improvisational talents can be used to the fullest during expeditionary maritime operations. Non-military specialists also have the opportunity to achieve additional competencies and work in the same technologically first-rate hydrographic environment as officers. In both capacities you can be deployed by the Hydrography Department for the preparation and execution of hydrographic expeditions and assignments.
