| A start was made with the Icebreaker Party in the White Star Tavern in Southampton, after most exhibitors finished their building work on Monday 26th March. The informal gathering set the ambiance for the start of the event on Tuesday morning. According to the organisers, it is buzzing! | |
As soon as the exhibition started, the delegates were streaming in the exhibition hall. This in order to find their way to the workshops and training sessions, as well as the demonstrations with the boats in the Southampton harbour. For all activities, people were queuing up to get in and to get their places, some workshops being full. The participants come from 46 countries from all over the world to be informed about the newest for oceanography and ocean business. ‘It is simply buzzing!’ says organiser Versha Carter. Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
