| The Society of Maritime Industries, through its constituent association the Association of Marine Scientific Industries (AMSI), is launching a new award to recognise individuals who have contributed most to the business of the marine science and technology sector in the UK. | ||

The Society's Chief Executive, John Murray commented that the UK marine science sector is a vibrant industry epitomised by the enthusiastic and successful entrepreneurs which work within it. This award will highlight the work of the sector particularly at a time of enhanced public concern for the marine environment and its close relationship to climate change.
Nominations are now invited for the AMSI Business Person of the Year 2008 which will be presented at a special ceremony during Oceanology International 2008 at ExCel London in March 2008 London following consideration of the nominations by a distinguished panel of judges lead by oceanographer Dr Ralph Rayner, Vice President of IMarEST.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
