Canadian ENCs Added to UKHO Database23/01/2008 |
| Canadian Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) which include the vital St Lawrence Seaway, a system of canals connecting the Great Lakes to the St Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean, have now been added for the first time to the UK Hydrographic Office's Admiralty database. |
|
Canada is a country with one of the longest navigable coastlines in the world, bordering the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans. These 680 ENCs will provide coverage of the eastern seaboard (including the Gulf of St Lawrence, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland), the St Lawrence River and Great Lakes, western seaboard (British Columbia coast) and some Arctic coverage. They include the St Lawrence Seaway which is of vital geographic and economic importance providing navigation to ocean-going vessels. Combined the St Lawrence River and Seaway is at 2,340 miles the world's longest deep draft inland waterway, stretching past Quebec, Montreal and Toronto and bordering the USA. Also included in these ENCs is Vancouver, in British Columbia, which is also the sixth largest on the Pacific coast of North America by cargo volume.
