FME User Conference Hosts Peter Batty

Safe Software has announced to hosting Peter Batty, renowned GIS visionary, as the keynote speaker at their annual FME Worldwide User Conference on 6 and 7 March in Vancouver, (BC, Canada). Don Murray, President of Safe Software explains this choice because the geospatial world is ever changing, with emerging technologies that have a high impact on the daily lives of industry professionals.
 

Described as one of the most respected geospatial visionaries by industry experts, Batty will share his insights and address new technologies and emerging trends. He will talk about his perspective on the disruptive changes currently happening in the GIS industry including the impact of "Neogeography" systems from Microsoft, Google, and others, and the growing use of multimedia.

Batty has worked with Safe Software since 1993 and they have really carved out a unique niche for themselves in the geospatial industry and he says to be pleased to see their continued success.

 

Peter Batty recently founded a startup focused on combining social networking with location, called Spatial Networking. Batty has also been involved with the Open GIS consortium and currently serves as a member of the Board of GITA.

Hydrographic Survey for Riverbed Erosion

 

U.S. Geological Survey were out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyzes the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
