Major Coup for IHC's Engineering Business

  17/03/2008
A major contract to provide a fully integrated pipelay system for Technip's newbuild 194m pipelay vessel (NPV) has been awarded to IHC's Engineering Business (EB).

From design, incorporation of Technip equipment, through build, installation on the NPV, commissioning and sea trials EB will be providing an integrated solution. EB will develop the Technip concept to provide an innovative pipelay system which, married with other vessel characteristics, will give Technip a competitive advantage. Delivery is scheduled for 2010.

The vessel will be built by STX Heavy Industries (Korea) and will transit to Tyneside, England to be fitted with the specialist pipelay equipment. The vessel is designed to carry 5600 tonnes of reeled pipe and to lay it in 3000m water depth, with 450 tonnes top tension.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
