5000th Profiling Float

  29/04/2008
This week Webb Research Corporation (WRC) will ship its 5000th variable buoyancy float. This design originated in the late 1980s, first as the ALACE float, widely used in the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. In recent years, WRC has provided over 2000 APEX profilers to customers in 19 nations, in support of the international ARGO program.

The APEX float operates autonomously, varying its depth from surface to 2000 metres, carrying CTD and other sensors. About every seven minutes, somewhere in the world, an APEX float is surfacing to transmit data via satellite.
