Situated on the Hooghly River, Kolkata Port is 126 miles from the sea and is the oldest major port in India. It is India's only riverine port with two dock systems - Kolkata Dock System at Kolkata, and a deep water dock system at Haldia Dock Complex. In the 2006-07 year these docks handled more than 55 million tonnes, placing the port second amongst all major ports in India, and making Kolkata Port the gateway to Eastern India.
Port operations in a facility this large and busy require sophisticated control, co-ordination and keeping up to date with modern practices and technology. As part of this process, Differential Global Positioning has been introduced to replace the existing Syledis network to make hydrographic surveys more precise and convenient.
