Successful Dye Tracing Workshop

  14/05/2008
A Dye Tracing workshop was hosted in the UK by Hampshire based RS Aqua Ltd and venued at the Dept of Engineering's facilities at the University of Warwick on Thursday 17 April 2008. The workshop brought together 11 speakers from academia, research, consultancy, commerce and survey who gave presentations on various dye tracing based applications for the coastal marine and freshwater markets.

The presentations emphasized how this simple technique can secure quick, low cost data for coastal, water utility and waste management engineers. Some 55 delegates contributed to the success of the event via a number of lively question and answer sessions. Discussions continued during lunch and refreshment breaks.

The presentations covered applications as diverse as the monitoring of flow patterns in Cambodian wetlands, the validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling tools and practical experiences of coastal dye tracing studies.

An "instruments in action" afternoon session offered attendees the opportunity to witness Turner Designs fluorometers in action within the Engineering Dept's extensive facilities, recently enhanced by a new flume.

Feedback from delegates indicated a high level of satisfaction with the content and organisation of the workshop. Copies of the presentations are available on-line from RS Aqua Ltd's web site at  http://www.rsaqua.co.uk/dyetracing.asp or please contact Turner Designs product specialist David Goldsmith at d.goldsmith@rsaqua.co.uk.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
