AUV Reaches 125,000km Mark

  20/05/2008
On 7 May 2008, the R/V Rig Supporter documented the 125,000th kilometre surveyed by C & C Technologies, Inc. (C & C) Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). This milestone was reached as the C-Surveyor I AUV was working for Petrobras S.A. in Brazil.

Thomas Chance, Chief Executive Officer of C & C Technologies brings this into perspective, like going around the world three times at 3.7 knots. This is an incredible achievement, and reflects the confidence that our worldwide client base has in the technology.

C & C began providing AUV services in January 2001. Its fleet of three AUVs has worked for more than 55 clients on 210 projects in the offshore waters of 12 different countries. In addition to the oil and gas industry, C & C's AUV clients include the Minerals Management Service (MMS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Louisiana State University, Texas A&M University and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
