LA Harbor Department orders Side-Scan Systems

  18/06/2008
L-3 Klein has received an order from the Los Angeles Harbor Department for multiple L-3 Klein System 5500 dynamically focused Multi-Beam Side Scan Sonar Systems. Harbour and Port Security professionals with the use of dual L-3 Klein Side Scan Sonar Systems are able to identify potential underwater threats, such as Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), to commercial shipping.

It is well understood that any underwater threat, whether real or perceived, would cause major disruptions to port activities as well as create unacceptable harm to our economy.  Use of the side scan sonar's on a continual basis in harbours is one more tool in keeping waterways and ports open.

Captain Michael Graychik of the Los Angeles Port Police said to be excited to be one of the first civilian Law Enforcement agencies to use this technology. This capability will contribute to mitigate threats to the port in a very timely manner as well the integration of data sharing with military Mine Counter Measure operations.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
