Annual Career and Recruitment Event

The event will be called ‘Ocean Careers' and will offer career opportunities and advice within the ocean technology, marine science and offshore industries every year, alternating between the Ocean Business and Oceanology International events.

The annualising of the event will aim to bring a coordinated approach to the very urgent need to attract more personnel to the business and builds on the success already achieved with the Oceanology International Careers Day.

This initiative is driven by the core industry bodies (International Marine Contractors Association, Society for Underwater Technology, Association of Marine Scientific Industries, UK Hydrographic Society and Institute of Marine Engineering and Science and Technology) who are all focused on addressing the recruitment issue and in recent years have worked on a number of joint initiatives including the successful Careers Day at Oceanology International 2008.

These organisations will support the event and ensure that its content correctly reflects the exciting and challenging global career opportunities available within the industry. The 2009 Ocean Careers event will be held at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (UK) alongside Ocean Business 2009 from 31st March to 2nd April 2009. The 2010 Ocean Careers event will be held at Oceanology International 2010 from the 9 - 11th March 2010 at ExCeL, London (UK).

The event is targeted at those that are currently looking for opportunities within the ocean technology, marine science and offshore industries and those who haven't yet studied or considered a career in this industry.

Ocean Careers will help students realise how their skills in engineering, science or mathematics can be utilised in this vast, exciting, forward thinking and extremely diverse industry. Taking the current state of the global economy into account, it is clearly becoming harder for many graduates, post graduates, newly qualified engineers and the unemployed to find work. Ocean Careers will help students to broaden their horizons and possibly transfer their skills to an industry that in the last few years has seen unprecedented and continuing growth coupled with rapid development technologies applied to ocean survey and research and an ever increasing shortage of skilled staff.
