Baby Waverider

  26/03/2009
The last twelve months have witnessed a further surge in orders for Datawell's Waverider buoys in their various versions. Of particular note have been additional installations within the various elements of the UK's Channel Coastal Observatory's regional coastal monitoring programmes and the CEFAS operated Wavenet strategic wave monitoring network (both DEFRA supported).

Baby Waverider

An interesting and somewhat unexpected market development has concerned a sales boom for the mini 40cm diameter GPS based Waverider, model DWR-G4, known affectionately as "baby buoy". This portable unit can be deployed in a free floating mode to gather real-time wave data for ship's trials, oil spill events, navy training operations, storm monitoring and, most recently, marine renewable energy installations. This latest application centres on an Irish wave energy test centre where acquisition of wave climate data is vital in establishing the efficiency of energy extraction systems.

The sensors from the Waverider buoys are also available for OEM applications where they will most commonly be used aboard other host platforms such as navigation and data buoys.

Another new Datawell development is the introduction of alkaline re-chargeable batteries. These have been successfully employed within the DWR-G4 baby buoy and are currently undergoing long term trialling aboard the 90cm Directional Waverider.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
