Amsi Members Ready

  31/03/2009
In welcoming visitors to Ocean Business Richard Burt, Chairman of AMSI said ‘the Association of Marine Scientific Industries (AMSI) is proud to continue its partnership with Intelligent Exhibitions and bring a larger, more comprehensive, Ocean Business show to Southampton this year. Ocean Business provides an important forum for technology developers, suppliers and users to interact within a vibrant professional environment. A full social programme is designed to enable daily business meetings to continue well into the night!'

AMSI members are clearly identified around the exhibition hall. Amongst the exhibits to be seen are:

  • BAE Systems' (stand A14) Panoramic Area Surveillance System (PASS) which is a very clever CCTV System using state of the art merging and fusion technology in the display of the combined picture from 12 cameras. In addition the full size Talisman UUV will be on display.
  • Designed and manufactured in Aberdeen by All Ocean Engineering (stand A16), the AC-ROV Underwater Inspection System is a genuine break through design and market leader. The AC-ROV is the smallest, most mobile, robust and portable micro underwater remotely operated vehicle system commercially available.
  • OSIL (stand C1) Shearwater Buoy - this is a widely used data collection buoy that has been used on numerous high profile developments, the most recent being the London Gateway Development. Also on show will be the OSIL MiniBAT - this is a unique towbody that is used extensively in EU water framework monitoring, its small size and lightweight allow sensors to be trawled at speeds of up to 10 knots facilitating much wider survey areas to be covered in the same period of time compared to traditional monitoring.
  • SEA (stand D1) will be demonstrating their shallow survey bathymetric sonar SWATHplus. SWATHplus has now been incorporated into a jet ski to provide rapid survey operations in difficult marine environments and this can be seen on the dockside.
  • Chelsea Technologies (stand T7) have on display the Fastracka II system for in situ and laboratory based assessment of primary production with the world's oceans. This technology was developed by the Brookhaven Laboratory in New York and licensed by Chelsea who has applied the technique to both the marine and homeland security markets.
  • Reson (stand L15) will be launching two new hi-definition Seabat Hydrographic sonars at the show. These are the latest state of the art systems which will be used in the offshore and ports/harbours sectors.
  • Sonardyne (stand E1) will be demonstrating new technology for Doppler/Inertial system tracking to improve subsea positioning along with the vessel systems.

The AMSI stand is A20 and John Murray together with Liz, Clementina and Janet will be on hand to assist visitors with their enquiries.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
