IMCA Publications

  20/04/2009
The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published three new documents, the Common Marine Inspection Document, Keeping Guidance on Offshore Diving in One Place and the new Safe Operation of AUVs.

The 'Common Marine Inspection Document' (CMID) has been updated by a cross-industry workgroup, with input provided by contractors (vessel operations) charterers (oil companies through their association OGP), consultants (inspectors) and other interested parties at dedicated workshops in Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur. The new document (IMCA M 149 Issue 7), has been thoroughly reviewed and rewritten, with clearer structure; and incorporating updates to reflect technological, operational and regulatory developments. A Word version of the new CMID for electronic completion by inspectors, and which can be kept as a 'live' document on vessel/company systems is available for free downloading.

Easy access to key documentation is vital for safety and efficiency, which is why the IMCA has produced the fifth edition of the 'IMCA Guidance on Offshore Diving CD'. The CD brings together guidance and information notes published by the IMCA Diving Division since 1995 (and previously AODC) together with the association's core activity material (Competence & Training; and Safety, Environment and Legislation) relevant to all IMCA members. It also includes the publications of the independent Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC).

Increasing commercial use of autonomous underwater vehicles for subsea surveying tasks has led to the publication of 'Considerations for the Safe Operations of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)' (IMCA S011) by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA).

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
