Field Operations for Australian Navy Completed01/05/2009 |
| Fugro Survey Pty Ltd has concluded field operations on a contract for hydrographic surveying services in support of nautical charting for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Australian Hydrographic Service (AHS). The survey, which was conducted using Airborne Hydrographic LIDAR, was in support of the Fisheries Protection Survey and Charting Project (FPSCP) and will ultimately enhance the capacity of maritime enforcement vessels to protect and secure Australian waters from incursion by illegal foreign fishing vessels. |

Field operations commenced in November 2007 and were concluded on schedule in January 2009. Data processing will continue through July 2009.
Over two deployments during this period, Fugro surveyed approximately 6,000km2 to IHO Order 1 Standards and reported approximately 200 potential dangers to navigation to the RAN AHS. The survey was extremely constrained by environmental constraints such as weather, water clarity and tides, but during the peak production period, Fugro was surveying to nautical charting standards at a rate of approximately 160 km2 per day. Data processing and reporting continues with all deliverables under this contract to be delivered to the RAN later this year.

Demo of RIEGL Airborne Bathy Scanner in Camcopter UAV |
It's not an AUV but an UAV. So an unmanned vehicle, but in the air instead of underwater. This movie shows a demonstration of the bathymetric laser scanning capabilities of the RIEGL VQ-820-GU hydrographic airborne sensor in reality. For more information on the technical side, please see the news release on Hydro International.
