Navigation Cadet Awarded04/08/2009 |
| Sub Lieutenant Aimee Moore has won a prestigious navigation award from the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) for showing the most improvement, progress and potential in coastal navigation and Bridge Watchkeeping skills whilst under training at the Dartmouth-based college. |
|
UKHO sponsors the coveted prize in a bid to highlight the importance of navigation skills required by future Bridge Watchkeeping Officers.
And to honour her achievement UKHO Chief Executive Mike Robinson was on hand to present Sub Lt Moore with her prize of a framed copy of a UKHO chart of Dartmouth Harbour surveyed by Captain Martin White RN in 1826.
The UKHO has close ties with BRNC as staff teach navigation at Initial Officer Training level and the college's Bridge Simulator is used by staff to further understand the maritime environment in which UKHO charts and publications are used. In addition UKHO provides charts and publications in support of the training.
During his visit to BRNC, Mr Robinson visited various areas of the college including the RN Leadership Academy and Navigation Department, he also met with Commodore Jake Moores, the Commanding Officer of the Naval Core Training Stream and navigation staff. A demonstration of the Bridge Simulator in action was also provided by the Cadets. Whilst at the college Mr Robinson was also able to meet a group of University of Plymouth lecturers who are based at BRNC specialising in the marine environment and who are keen to forge training and education links with UKHO.
Since passing out of BRNC, Sub Lt Moore has completed Initial Warfare Officer training and is moving on to a Common Fleet Training Appointment with HMS Daring.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
