| Chesapeake Technology held its SonarWiz.MAP Summer Training Workshop in New Haven, Connecticut from 6 to 8 July. With approximately 27 attendees from the US, Sweden, Italy, Chile and Mexico, the training workshop, held at the School of Sound, was a valuable learning experience for the professionals, and an opportunity to learn first-hand of other's experiences with the program. |
|
The first day consisted of hands-on familiarisation with the software and project utilisation. Cilla Erlandsson, Geological Survey of Sweden shares her experience: "In my work with seabed classification of surficial substrates. I hope to be able to detect and produce detailed maps of different hard bottom fractions...and also to more easily produce comprehensive 3D-maps that combine different data sets from different disciplines."
On the second day, attendees were broken into smaller groups and given the opportunity to experience the devices in action on the Long Island Sound aboard the RV Island Rover, provided by the School of Sound.
Rob Morris of EdgeTech contributed both time and equipment to the experiment. The Edgetech 4125 sidescan sonar and 3100P/424 sub-bottom profiler were demonstrated on-board to provide all attendees with an understanding of the full process of gathering and processing data using different methods.
Day three finalised the workshop with a morning wrap-up and one-on-one sessions with Brissette for those with more specified needs and questions dealing with the software. Attendee, Felipe Rios of Bentos commented, "It was worth every mile to travel all the way from Chile to participate in this training. I have now a more complete understanding of the capabilities of SonarWiz.MAP."

Hydrographic Survey for Riverbed Erosion |
U.S. Geological Survey were out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyzes the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
