MVP200 Orders

  01/10/2009
NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations has placed an order for two Odim MVP200 moving vessel profiling systems. OMAO operates a variety of specialised aircraft and ships to complete NOAA's environmental and scientific missions. The two MVPs are scheduled to be installed on the NOAA Ships Rainier and Ferdinand R Hassler, NOAA's newest ocean and coastal mapping vessel.

The ODIM MVP 200s have been acquired for the collection of real-time and continuous sound speed profile information for ocean mapping purposes. The ODIM MVP is a self-contained, semi-autonomous device, which collects oceanographic data while the vessel is underway. The sound velocity profiler system includes a computer controlled winch and deployment system for a variety of the free-fall sensor systems.

OMAO is apart from environmental and scientific missions also responsible for the administration and implementation of the NOAA Diving Programme, Small Boat Programme and Aviation Safety Programme, to ensure safe and efficient operations in NOAA-sponsored underwater activities and aviation and small boat operations.

MCA on Surveying the British Coast

Rob Spillard explains how the MCA is conducting hydrographic surveys, including the history of British hydrographic surveying, latest developments in technology and wreck research projects, sometimes accompanied by a BBC TV camera crew. This movie includes an example of the discovery of two sunken WWI submarines off the Orkney Islands.
