Aquamarine Power Wins Green Industry Award02/10/2009 |
| Wave energy developer Aquamarine Power was honoured with the ‘Best Green Industry SME Award' at the Scottish Green Awards, held in Glasgow (UK) on 1st October 2009. The company is developing the UK's first nearshore wave energy converter, known as Oyster. Last month, the first phase of the first installation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney was completed, ahead of grid connection and sea trials later this year. |

Oyster is designed to capture the energy found in nearshore waves up to depths of 10 to 12 metres. The device combines new technologies with a proven hydro-electric power generation system. A commercial farm of just 20 Oyster devices (15MW) could provide clean renewable energy to a town of 9,000 homes.
Aquamarine Power beat three other companies to win the coveted award.
Earlier this year Aquamarine Power won the ‘Innovator Award 2009' at this year's British Renewable Energy Awards, held in London on 11th June 2009.
The Scottish Green Awards are run by Scottish Business Insider in association with ScottishPower. The awards honour Scottish companies whose activities encourage sustainability, tackle climate change and are committed to improving energy efficiency. Hydrographic Survey for Riverbed Erosion |
U.S. Geological Survey were out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyzes the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
