Teledyne TSS Moves

The offices and workshops of Teledyne TSS will be moving to one of the most forward-thinking business environments in southern England on the 12 October 2009. Although only three miles from its present 1960s factory in Watford, UK, the Croxley Green Business Park is a world away in both working environment and ecological impact. The new factory is surrounded by lawns and ornamental lakes in a 75-acre park that even has its own nature reserve.
 

 

With bicycles available for tenants' use, It has been designed to provide a pleasant and comfortable working environment for the employees of the 50 high technology companies based there.

 

TSS management believes that the new factory will also have a major impact upon  staff well-being and the productivity of its range of motion sensors, gyro compasses, inertial navigation systems and pipe and cable trackers.  Clad in polished cream laminate, the new building will almost double the amount of space available overall. Customers and service support will also benefit indirectly as a twenty per cent increase in manufacturing space and a sales area three times larger than the company's previous office is expected to offer a major boost to productivity and efficiency.

 

Because the company was founded 100 years ago, it has a large reserve of historically significant technology. A new demonstration room and museum will provide an additional point of interest for visitors who are expected to find the company's new location on the edge of the Hertfordshire countryside an attractive destination.

 

The move represents a major investment by Teledyne TSS and includes the construction of an advanced clean room and environmental testing area. Designated product manufacturing zones will improve efficiency and quality control while also leaving ample space for additional production lines for new products. Having been laid out in line with lean manufacturing principles that streamline throughput and minimise wasteful and inefficient practices the premises, Teledyne TSS has invested heavily in training its personnel in business improvement techniques and lean manufacturing.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
