Scripps Orders Odim LOPC

  06/10/2009
ODIM Brooke Ocean has received an order for the delivery of three ODIM LOPC to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Two of the LOPCs are to be integrated into the Scripps-developed SOLOPC. The SOLOPC is a Sounding Oceanographic Lagrangian Observer float with a Laser Optical Plankton Counter.

The system combines an ODIM LOPC with a fluorometer and optical backscatter sensor to make an autonomous biological profiler.  The instrument senses plankton and other particles over a size range of 100μm to 1cm in profiles to 300m in depth and sends data ashore via satellite. The third LOPC is a self-logging unit that will be installed on Scripps's zooplankton bongo net for use in CalCOFI and the CCE LTER programs.

The LOPC is the next generation in plankton profiling. The LOPC's high speed processing and improved detection plane provides detection counts at higher resolutions and higher concentrations with lower coincidence.  The system can be installed on various towbody scenarios as well as on the ODIM MVPTM multi sensor free fall fish, enabling vertical real-time water column profiling while underway at speeds up to 12 knots.

MCA on Surveying the British Coast

Rob Spillard explains how the MCA is conducting hydrographic surveys, including the history of British hydrographic surveying, latest developments in technology and wreck research projects, sometimes accompanied by a BBC TV camera crew. This movie includes an example of the discovery of two sunken WWI submarines off the Orkney Islands.
