SMM India Technology Trade Fair

  10/11/2009
The Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine (SMM India) technology trade fair is being held at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai from the 12th to 14th November 2009. This second overseas SMM event will feature more than 100 exhibitors from all parts of the world, presenting the latest technology and products for shipbuilding and the maritime equipment industry.

Good business prospects are anticipated specifically for the international maritime equipment supply business, according to Hauke Schlegel, Executive Director of the Shipbuilding and Offshore Supply Section of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). He believes that "the international shipbuilding and offshore industry has a new base at SMM India to develop the enormous potential of the Indian maritime market. India is following a clear course for development of the maritime sector to international standards. And the fastest way for Indian industry to move ahead is by means of international partnerships." Hauke Schlegel will speak as Guest of Honour on the first day of the conference.

The accompanying conference takes a forward-looking approach, with the slogan "Maritime India - The Path Ahead". The Indian Minister of Shipping anticipates a lively exchange of ideas and experience by the representatives from government organisations and company management, investors, bankers, project managers and project developers.

The conference session on "India's Shipbuilding - Opportunities, Challenges & Imperatives" will be addressed by Matthew Cuerdon, Vice President Business Development of AVEVA NET Solutions Ltd from the United Kingdom, taking up the question of partnerships and discussing the opportunities arising from collaboration with shared use of a digital information hub.

International equipment suppliers will present their products and services in concentrated form at the session on "Maritime Technology & Equipment". For example, Georg E. Scheuing from the German engine builder MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH presents advanced propulsion systems for offshore supply vessels. Captain Tarun K. Mathur of Transas Marine Pacific, Singapore, discusses the reliability of navigation systems and implementation of this technology on ships. Dr A.A. Vasilyev of the Russian Shipbuilding & Shiprepair Technology Centre presents a concept for modernisation of shipyards, specifically focusing on modular installations and naval vessels. The capabilities of a floating infrastructure for improvement of container handling in Indian ports will be presented by Dr Ulrich Malchow, Managing Director Port Feeder Barge from Germany.
