L-3 Klein Introduces Bathy 5000 V2

  18/11/2009
L-3 Klein have introduced the Bathy 5000-V2, their latest product for hydrographic surveys. The system was released to the commercial market at the Oceans 2009 Conference in Biloxi, MS. The Oceans 2009 Conference was attended by over 2,200 representatives from the oceanographic community and the L-3 Klein Bathy 5000-V2 was well received.

L-3 Klein also presented a technical paper at Oceans 2009 outlining the system performance and specifications. The L-3 Klein Bathy 5000-V2 is a hydrographic survey system which has the ability to simultaneously collect IHO quality swath bathymetry and high-resolution multibeam side-scan data in a co-registered and georeferenced dataset.

The L-3 Klein Bathy 5000-V2 is the only product in its class to provide frequency modulated (FM) chirp processing for both bathymetry and side scan, providing high resolution with extended range performance. The wide-swath bathymetry performance meets IHO-SP-44 Special Order standards for hydrographic surveys and provides a 2X survey coverage advantage over traditional multi-beam echo sounders in shallow water. The side scan has the ability to produce 10cm resolution side scan in the high-resolution mode.

The dual functionality of the L-3 Klein Bathy 5000-V2 effectively allows two surveys to be accomplished in one pass, saving significant ship time and expense. The cost of ownership of the L-3 Klein Bathy 5000-V2 is extremely reasonable relative to the competitive acquisition price, the cost of operating one system instead of two and the 50% savings in survey time.

L-3 Klein, a division of L-3 Marine & Power Systems, is located in Salem, New Hampshire and design and manufacture sensor technology such as high-resolution sonar systems, marine navigation systems and radar-based security and surveillance systems. Klein's customers include commercial, government and military organisations, shipping and offshore oil companies and related support contractors, maritime facilities, academic institutions and underwater vehicle manufacturers. MCA on Surveying the British Coast

Rob Spillard explains how the MCA is conducting hydrographic surveys, including the history of British hydrographic surveying, latest developments in technology and wreck research projects, sometimes accompanied by a BBC TV camera crew. This movie includes an example of the discovery of two sunken WWI submarines off the Orkney Islands.
