Teaming Up to Provide Hydroacoustic Demo Boat

  09/03/2010
Kongsberg Maritime will once again provide visitors to Oceanology International with a live product demonstration facility aboard a fully equipped demo boat, this year in conjunction with survey company MMT. Stationed on the dock just outside of the ExCeL exhibition centre, the 16m survey boat MMT Seabeam is equipped with a typical Kongsberg Maritime survey suite and will be taking to the water regularly for the duration of Oi10.

Seabeam is giving demos with Kongsberg equipment

"With such positive feedback on our live demonstrations at previous exhibitions we are delighted to return to Oceanology International with a demo boat again, and are quietly confident that we'll have a busy time on the water," comments Peter Bennett, Hydrography Sales Manager (UK and Ireland), Kongsberg Maritime Ltd. "MMT Seabam will give us the opportunity to show visitors exactly how our hydrographic solutions work in a live situation, which gives them a much better insight into how they can best utilise them for their own operations."

The survey suite aboard MMT Seabeam at Oceanology International includes a Kongsberg EM3002 multibeam, GeoAcoustics GeoSwath Plus wide swath sonar and Kongsberg Seatex Seapath 300 position, attitude and heading system with the next generation motion reference unit, MRU5+. The team onboard are experienced survey technology specialists and in addition to demonstrating the systems in a live situation are also well qualified to discuss Kongsberg Maritime's complete portfolio of products for the survey industry.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
