| WFS Technologies, supplier of through-water and through-ground electromagnetic communications and sensing systems, announces the appointment of Dr Mark Volanthen as chief executive officer. Having served on the board of WFS as a non-executive director since 2008, today Dr Volanthen joins the team full time to drive the business forwards. |

For the previous seven years Mark was a director of Insensys Ltd and held positions including CTO and CEO Insensys Aerospace & Defence. Prior to joining Insensys, Mark held a variety of management positions with Silecs and Kymata. He has a strong track record of delivering growth and shareholder value in emerging technology businesses.
Dr Volanthen holds a 1st class MA in Engineering from St John's College Cambridge, an MBA from Edinburgh University, and a PhD in instrumentation systems from Southampton University. Mark has published over 30 technical papers, is named inventor on over 20 international patent applications and is a fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
