WFS Technologies Appoints Chief Executive Officer

WFS Technologies, supplier of through-water and through-ground electromagnetic communications and sensing systems, announces the appointment of Dr Mark Volanthen as chief executive officer. Having served on the board of WFS as a non-executive director since 2008, today Dr Volanthen joins the team full time to drive the business forwards.

 

For the previous seven years Mark was a director of Insensys Ltd and held positions including CTO and CEO Insensys Aerospace & Defence. Prior to joining Insensys, Mark held a variety of management positions with Silecs and Kymata. He has a strong track record of delivering growth and shareholder value in emerging technology businesses.

 

Dr Volanthen holds a 1st class MA in Engineering from St John's College Cambridge, an MBA from Edinburgh University, and a PhD in instrumentation systems from Southampton University. Mark has published over 30 technical papers, is named inventor on over 20 international patent applications and is a fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
