GAPS for Rental Pool02/04/2010 |
| IXSEA has sold two Global Acoustic Positioning Systems (GAPS) to Unique System (UK). The units will be available for hire by customers in the UK, India and the Middle East, where there has been particular interest in the technology. Using the equipment, they can track ROVs, AUVs, divers and sonar or other towed systems with high accuracy. |
|
GAPS can be used in a wide range of water depths, but it performs particularly well in extremely shallow, acoustically noisy waters. The units are pre-calibrated and very simple to operate, being capable of deployment in less than an hour.
GAPS is the second IXSEA technology to be bought by Unique System. The rental company also offers its customers OCTANS gyrocompass and motion sensor units.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
