Princess Royal to Attend INEC 2010

  08/04/2010
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal is to attend the opening day of the 10th International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC 2010), being held from Tuesday 11th to Thursday 13th May 2010 at HM Naval Base, Portsmouth, UK.

"We are delighted that Her Royal Highness, an Honorary Fellow of our Institute, will be with us on the opening day of INEC 2010, and attending a dinner with the INEC Technical Committee, Keynote Speakers and Sponsors and hosted by Rear Admiral Nigel Guild, the 108th President of IMarEST, at HM Naval Base the evening before the conference opens," says Dr Marcus Jones, Chief Executive of The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) who organise INEC 2010.

"As Chief Commandant for Women in the Royal Navy we believe she will find the conference, with its theme ‘The Affordable Future Fleet' of particular interest. It will explore the latest developments and innovations in naval engineering and be addressing and debating what might make up an affordable future fleet; both for the Royal Navy and for all other international naval forces."

INEC has a long history. It is held every two years with the venue alternating between the UK and overseas. HM Naval Base is a fitting venue for the 10th event in the series, which will be held in the historic Rope Store. Up to 400 delegates from the UK and overseas navies and related industries are expected at INEC 2010.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
