Birns Appoints Director of Corporate Communications

Birns has appointed Amy Brown as its Director of Corporate Communications. In her new position, she will be responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive set of strategic external marketing, media relations and internal communications programs for the ISO 9001:2008-certified company.


Amy BrownShe will advise the company's CEO on critical communications matters and will lead all branding and market share strategies, including the development and launch of BIRNS' new global corporate identity.


Brown brings more than 12 years of expertise in fully integrated marketing communications to her new role. Prior to joining the team at BIRNS, she served as Director of Public Relations for Los Angeles-based Bear Enthusiast Marketing Group, where she managed a team of account executives and designers and was responsible for top national and global marine technology accounts like Suzuki Marine, Teleflex, Intellian and Ocean LED. Brown's successful career also includes leadership roles in marketing and corporate communications in a wide range of industries, including CDMA wireless technology, military, automotive, mining and aggregate and healthcare.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
