Guys. I am an Indian ROV technician. I am working for Oceaneering International. The situation of industry is very bad. There is cut throat compettion and very few jobs being chased by many companies. I am lucky that I work for a company that has not sacked anyone due to recession but other comapnies have let go most of theri ROV crew. Please don't get fooled by the good money promised adn job lure by these schools. Even when the demand picks up most of these companies look for experienced guys and those with electronic skills. No one gives inexperienced a chance. Even if a ROV company wants to employ someone inexperienced they can not because most contracts by Clients demand at least two year expereince.

Guys, getting a job as an ROV pilot after taking the course is not a guarantee that you get the job. ROV pilot courses are very very expensive. Most ROV companies actually hire people with multi background in Electronics, Electrical, mechanical,IT, Instrumentation and hydraulics....If you have offshore experience, it's a plus but not necessary because if you qualify for the above mentioned skills, even if you don't have experience in any ROV industry or offshore, you will get the necessary training from the company that will hire you. Why I know all these? it is becuase I recently joined an ROV company. My experience? 9 years in onshore /offshore Drilling and more than 5 years in Repair and maintenance of electro-hydraulics tools ( not to mention my other experience in oil and gas Industry). ROV experience ??? zero! why I was hired? because of my multi skills in the above mentioned. I was even planning to go on a course in the Philippines, but my boss told me ..why?? you don't need it! our ROV is more advance than any ROV in the world now ( yes it is true). the company that i joined now is a newly developed ROV made in Norway and soon we will hire people with the above backgrounds I mentioned and we will train them by our own ROV pilot school. So don't waste your money...instead, try to study electronics and hydraulics courses.

I hate to say it guys but alot of the bigger companies have alot of trainees already in place and even for them they struggle to get the days at the minute.
Hopefully you will find it will start picking up again after the slowish last few years but i wouldn't advise doing the course with expectations of getting a job straight away.
Last year saw alot of experienced guys struggle to accumulate days.
Sorry to put a downer on you guys but i would put my money into getting offshore on the wind farms if i was you guys.

I,ve been an ROV engineer for 12 years now.
YOU need a technical background & be very technically minded as fixing these ROV\'s requires years of Electrical ,mechanical IT,Hydraulic experience. I work as an offshore Superintendent now & earn major coin. Is it worth it ? YES, but I can handle the fact that I work away from home up 8 months a year. This life is also a relationship / marriage breaker. SO if you value money more than anything else in your life then this is the life for you.....It really is a single mans game.
As for many ex -gamers in the trade THAT\'s an urban myth!

I am an electronics engineer and have been seriously considering ROV's as a career. If you all read the previous comments and also go onto ROV World you will see that, at the moment, It's a waste of time conducting any sorts of courses (especially when they cost £££). So...for that reason, I have given up ! My advice to all budding ROV pilots is do what I'm doing and try something else until it picks up. Good luck all !!!! Brian

The ROV Industry Is a new life not a new job that pays well, sit down and think about what you want in life, Offshore will make or break you and in the 4 years I have been offshore I have seen more people break then make it. It really is a big decision, And is unfare on the guys your on the job with when you decide its too much its not like working around the corner from home and can nip home when your feeling down, Dont believe everything you read "BECOME AN ROV PILOT AND EARN £350 A DAY!!!" i was made redundant earlier this year so thought it was due time to start looking for a job with future = money, stability, challenge, interesting. Working on the Oilrigs came to mind and then i came across ROV on the internet. I've made inquiries to various companies about prices & dates and they all seem over optimistic to the point of when advice becomes a sale.I did'nt make a decision to do any course based on the fact that it sounds too good to be true and investing that amount of personal money i don't have when there's no guarantee of a job. I'm a good Engineer and have the qualifications to prove it but i have no Marine/Oilrig background.

Reply for Chem female Engineer considering ROV work:- I have worked with 2 female ROV Pilots and know of one other.
Whilst it is certainly possible for a woman to work as an ROV Pilot/Tech I have encountered a client in Iran who would not take female staff for offshore work.
Having said that I have met many ladies working offshore in Engineering job so do apply if you wish. As for the suggestion that you need good English to work with ROVs this is not necessarily true on a recent job in Angola the primary language was French (French company) and Portugese was the second most spoken language! Good Luck!
Would like to know how you get on.

Guys, Hear me out loud "THERE ARE NO ROV PILOT JOBS AVAILABLE". don't waste ur precious money. These training schools are a pure scam. On date there are nearly 30,000 Trainee ROV Pilots in UK but no jobs for them. I have got my license from Philippines 2 years ago and still looking for a Job. Experienced Divers are getting trained in ROV's and Industries prefer them as they already know the off shores very well. It's so simple, count the number of offshore rigs in the world, count the number of ROV's manufactured in the world and just calculate, how can there be Plenty of JOBS for ROV PILOTS

For those of you interested in truely pursuing a career as an ROV Pilot/Tech look to Memorial University of Newfoundland's Marine Technology Center, located in Newfoundland Canada. This accredited technical diploma program includes an 8 week work term and produces some of the most highly sought after new recruits in the industry. Not only do you get access to university level electronics and hydraulics/mechasnics courses, but you get to train on the industry leading VROV simulator, a world class pilot trianing simulator of a work class ROV.
If truely serious, and want the best chance of success, these will be the best two years spent in your budding career...http://www.mi.mun.ca/ROV/

I been working with work class and eye ball rovs for the past 36 years and at the moment there is very little work available I can see very little point in doing a training course which in many cases you paying out for a bank loan just to wait at home for nothing ,All ready there are thousands of trainees still waiting , The companys that do have work require Experienced personnel yes your time will come in a few years time but now your wasteing your money .Subman 17 .05.09
