Navigation Systems for Three Italian Bulk Carriers

  13/07/2010
Northrop Grumman Corporation is to supply the bridge navigation systems for three new bulk carriers being built in China for Italian shipowner Deiulemar Shipping. Each of the ships is to be fitted with the company's Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT S- and X-band radars, gyrocompass, autopilot, steering control, speed log, echosounder, voyage data recorder and other navigation systems.

The equipment is being supplied through Telemar, the sales and service representative for Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine products and systems in Italy. Telemar will oversee the installations and provide technical support and service for the shipboard navigation systems.
The 176,000-deadweight ton ships are on order from New Century Shipbuilding Company's New Times Shipbuilding yard in Jiangsu, China. They are due for delivery to the owner in 2010/2011.

"The VisionMaster FT technology provides a high level of integration of the ship's bridge systems and sensors to improve efficiency and safety of navigation," said J. Nolasco DaCunha, vice president of Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine.

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion

Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.

Gauge height at the Williston gauge was approximately 27.65 feet when this video was taken. Additional information about the USGS streamgauge at Williston is available at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis?program=nwisman&site_no=06330000
