Jane Bugler, the International Marine Contractors Association's (IMCA) Technical Director was recently invited by member company, Mermaid Offshore Services, to name their newest diving support vessel (DSV) the Mermaid Endurer, built in Norway by the Bergen Group.
"I was delighted to be invited to name Mermaid Endurer," she said at the naming ceremony. "It is a tribute to all those involved in commissioning, designing and building her - particularly in the current difficult economic circumstances - that the diving sector now has such a fine new vessel to add to the global fleet. All of you from Mermaid and Bergen Group are to be congratulated."
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
