Vessel And Voyage Optimisation Solution Trial31/08/2010 |
| The US Navy is to start a 6-month trial evaluation of the Jeppesen Vessel and Voyage Optimisation Solution (VVOS). This technology combines ocean weather forecasts, advanced computer modelling of ship performance, and sophisticated, proprietary route optimisation algorithms to potentially improve the efficiency of ship navigation by reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, improving ETAs and providing valuable data that can be used to help extend the life of a vessel. VVOS will be evaluated by Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command - CNMOC - at the Naval Maritime Forecast Centers in Norfolk, VA, USA, and Pearl Harbor, HI, USA. |

Hydrographic Survey of Riverbed Erosion |
Members of the US Geological Survey were filmed while out on the Missouri River at Williston, North Dakota, USA, performing a hydrographic survey to monitor the state of riverbed erosion. They were using a multibeam echo sounder which transmits sound energy and analyses the return signal (echo) that has bounced off the riverbed or other objects. Multibeam sonars emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull to produce fan-shaped coverage of the riverbed.
