Jeppesen Launches Community Resource08/09/2010 |
| Jeppesen has launched a new community resource for the maritime industry, as shipping companies prepare for the IMO's mandatory carriage requirements for ECDIS and e-Navigation implementation plan. This platform and associated forums in social media spaces such as Facebook and LinkedIn, provide information about technical concepts, rules, new developments and trends. They also give the maritime community a place to ask questions and discuss how industrial and regulatory developments relating to ECDIS will affect their operations. |
|
According to marketing and communication manager for Jeppesen Willy Zeiler, e-Navigation and mandatory ECDIS will impact everyone in the shipping industry for a generation, as it involves using all the capabilities of technology to empower ships' operators and improve decision-making. To make these developments accessible to the entire community the new forum has been developed.
A central element of the site is an interlinked reference library of articles relating directly to ECDIS and e-Navigation. Examples include articles on ECDIS functionality, type-approval, ENCs, SENC, RENCs, hydrographic offices and other bodies. Visitors can propose changes or new articles. In addition, the site has a news and expert opinions section, where visitors can track developments in the field. Finally, links to sites like Twitter, Facebook, Delicious and LinkedIn allow the community to share, interact and discuss their own take on e-Navigation issues.
Jeppesen has developed its e-Navigation resource as a service to the international maritime community, as it adapts to new regulations affecting bridge navigation and ECDIS. The site will continue to produce articles and stories that help visitors navigate this world of information. Participants in the growing e-Navigation community are encouraged to participate in related forums, to find answers, to build their network and to share knowledge, to the broader public benefit.
