IEEE OES announced its annual award recipients at OCEANS '11. The conference was held from 19th to 22nd September 2011 in Kona, HI, USA. The awards were presented at the Awards Luncheon held on Tuesday, 20th September. The Distinguished Technical Achievement Award recipient Christopher von Alt was recognised for his significant accomplishments in oceanic engineering. The Distinguished Service Award recipient James T. Barbera was honoured for outstanding contributions towards the objectives of the Oceanic Engineering Society.

Also honoured at the Awards luncheon was Donald E. Barrick. He was named IEEE Fellow, Class of 2011. His recent research has involved use of HF-radar surface current data for improving ocean circulation models and use of normal modes to extend and improve nowcast maps of HF radar data in bays and estuaries.

Mr Von Alt is a leader in the development and use of autonomous underwater vehicles in oceanography, underwater acoustics, and ocean engineering. Mr Barbera has been active in the management of IEEE OES for many years serving on the Administrative Committee for twelve of those years.
