Underwater Acoustic Modems With Embedded Developer Platform

  22/05/2012
EvoLogics GmbH, Germany, is launching the White Line Science Edition, a line of S2CR underwater acoustic modems with an embedded network protocol development platform. Intended for universities and other research facilities, the S2CR White Line Science Edition modems are developed to design, test and implement underwater acoustic network protocols.

Evologics S2CR WiSE
Underwater acoustic networks are an effective wireless solution for multiple maritime and offshore applications, being the enabling technology to connect and coordinate multiple seafloor sensors and autonomous underwater vehicles into a network for real-time data collection, monitoring, exploration, navigation, etc.

New underwater networking technologies are in great demand, and network protocols that ensure reliable underwater operations are of growing importance to the industry.

EvoLogics has designed an open environment for network protocol developers, a flexible framework to test new network protocols on real hardware facilitating developers with an embedded developer sandbox of up to 32GB. The EvoLogics WiSE toolchain allows to build custom firmware modules for S2C modems and opens endless opportunities for new implementations.

EvoLogics S2CR WiSE modems are a testbed for new underwater network protocols, as test scenarios for performance evaluation can run on real hardware in real-world conditions. The NS-2 framework is preinstalled on all S2CR WiSE modems. NS-2, a widely used network simulator, supports simulation of TCP, routing and multicast protocols over communication networks. Without rewriting the code, existing NS-2 network protocol scripts can now be run directly on acoustic modems, making S2C WiSE a time- and cost-effective hardware solution that does not require additional coding and eliminates the need to interface each node of the test network to a dedicated host PC with NS-2.

The EvoLogics WiSE line includes the S2CR 48/78 WiSE and S2CR 18/34 WiSE underwater acoustic modems. Implementing the patented S2C technology, these devices offer the scientific community all the benefits of the main EvoLogics S2C R modem range. Both S2CR WiSE modems are available in a variety of configurations to suit a wide range of application scenarios.

Demo of RIEGL Airborne Bathy Scanner in Camcopter UAV

It's not an AUV but an UAV. So an unmanned vehicle, but in the air instead of underwater. This movie shows a demonstration of the bathymetric laser scanning capabilities of the RIEGL VQ-820-GU hydrographic airborne sensor in reality. For more information on the technical side, please see the news release on Hydro International.
